INTENSIVE READING is also called study reading because you have to read a textbook slowly and carefully. A lot of attention is paid to the details because the aim is to gather more knowledge about a subject. You may need to read a sentence many times to memorise it or stop many times to check the meanings of words.
EXTENSIVE READING is done to have the general understanding of a text. It usually involves reading a lot for more research or simply for interest. In intensive reading, you do not need to worry about the details.
SKIMMING is a type of reading that enables you to know what a text is about. Many people use this technique to read internet articles, newspapers and reports. When you skim over the text, you don't look for details, because you only want to know if the topic interests you or not or if it is what you need to read.
SCANNING is a quick reading to find specific information such as dates, contact numbers or names. When you scan for something in a text, you get very little information out of it because you do not read and understand every single word in the text. Using a pencil or finger along with quick eye movement help find the right information you need.
